Progress Report - June 2010

New Zealand emissions trading commences

June Progress Report - news affecting you and your understanding of climate change.

  • On the 1 July 2010 New Zealand will apply a price to carbon emissions for key sectors through the use of carbon emission credits.
  • Julia Gillard, Australia's new Prime Minister, has been very careful not to make any commitments to reducing Australia's carbon emissions, but she has shown her support (see quote in margin).
  • A recent study found that 97 percent of scientific experts agree that climate change is "very likely" caused mainly by human activity.
  • This month's Carbon Emission Reduction Tip (CERT 4) is to think twice before turning on the clothes dryer.

More detail in the June Progress Report (Estimated Reading Time = 3 min 15 sec)

// I believe human beings contribute to climate change. And it is as disappointing to me as it is to millions of Australians that we do not have a price on carbon. //

Act Now

The message from science is clear - we urgently need to act now to reduce global carbon emissions and help stop damaging climate change.

The evidence linking human carbon emissions to global warming is clear. We need to make deep cuts in carbon emissions in order to avoid the irreversible consequences of damaging climate change.

Those consequences become severe once temperatures have risen above 2 degrees Celsius. We must and can avoid this much warming.
